Menswear Guide: Finding a Signature Scent (Part Two)

Menswear Guide: Finding a Signature Scent (Part Two)

The response to part one of this article was a little larger than expected, so thank you. Hopefully it offered some knowledge or at least re-assured your judgement on the bottles you have sitting within your own collection.

We welcomed Edd to recommend his favourite fragrances for each season and I was more than happy to see a couple of my own collection in there, especially Tere D'Hermes which I adore.

Edd: Fragrance is such a subjective, emotive, primal and powerful, all encompassing force, it’s always fascinating to hear how it affects people. Does it fill you with joy, or repulsion? Does it remind you of a favourite place, or a time in your life? If the fragrance was a movie star, who would it be, and why!

There is a whole new olfactory world for you to discover, and right now, we’re standing on the very precipice of bottomless rabbit hole.

Spring/summer recommendations:

Buongiorno by Acqua di Parma

This was first launched in 2025 and the perfumer behind it is Emilie Bouge. Top notes are Basil, Spearmint, Lemon, Petitgrain and Rosemary; middle notes are Mandarin Leaf and Wild Lavender; base notes are White Musk, Cedarwood and Amber. Billed as a tribute to the Italian summer, its breezy, herbal, citric, uplifting and incredibly chic, in a very nonchalant manner.

Golden Hour by The Gate Fragrances Paris.

Golden Hour was launched in 2025. The nose behind this fragrance is Özge Erdoğmuş Altınel. Top notes are Mango, Exotic Fruits, Coconut, Bergamot, Lemon and Wild Berries; middle notes are Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Jasmine and Peony; base notes are White Musk, Vanilla, Amber and Moss.

This luminous fragrance opens with a juicy, sun-drenched medley of mango, exotic fruits, and creamy coconut. Reminiscent of the best tropical escape that you could ever possibly imagine. Radiant, warm, juicy, and utterly delicious. The performance of this fragrance is amazing, too. One of the best  releases in 2025.

Terre d'Hermès edt by Hermès

The nose behind this fragrance is Jean-Claude Ellena. First launched in 2006, Terre d'Hermès tells the story of man's relationship with the earth, and his harmonious dialogue with nature and the elements.

Top notes are Orange and Grapefruit; middle notes are Pepper, Pelargonium and Flint; base notes are Vetiver, Cedar, Patchouli and Benzoin.

I’d likened this to a woody orange peel with an earthiness reminiscent of petrichor. It’s a bright, crisp citrus, with a bold grapefruit, layered over a glinting, mineralic, earthy base of vetiver. Familiar, but still unique. Sophisticated, yet incredibly versatile. This has become an almost timeless classic. The edt is my favourite iteration of the fragrance.

Autumn/winter recommendations:

Haltane by Parfums de Marly Haltane was launched in 2021. Top notes are Clary Sage, Lavender and Bergamot; middle notes are Saffron and Praline; base notes are Agarwood (Oud) and Cedar.

It opens with sweet bergamot with some lovely herbaceous qualities, which is quickly balanced by saffron with an absolutely gorgeously sweet praline note and woody/oud undertones. Elegant, sweet, powerful. Something of a head turner, too.

Enigma Pour Homme Parfum Cologne by Roja Dove

This was first launched in 2019. The nose behind this fragrance is Roja Dove. Top note is Bergamot; middle notes are Heliotrope, Jasmine, Geranium, Neroli and Rose de Mai; base notes are Cognac, Vanilla, Benzoin, Tobacco, Ginger, Ambergris, Cardamom, Sandalwood, Pepper and Patchouli.

Without a doubt, this is a deep, opulent, very refined fragrance. A citric, boozy, spiced, cola-esque, sweet, gentlemanly fragrance with a seductive, masculine edge.. A long night ahead filled devilish deeds awaits you.

Eau Duelle Eau de Parfum by Diptyque

Eau Duelle Eau de Parfum was launched in 2013 and the nose behind this fragrance is Fabrice Pellegrin. The notes are :Pink peppercorn, juniper berry, cardamom, cypress, frankincense, calamus, Black ceylan tea, cistus, Bourbon vanilla, vanilla pod, vetyver, cypriol, and ambroxin.

This is a beautiful, tea-like, dark, spicy, and a little smoky at times, rich vanillic fragrance. The vanilla here a is sumptuous, high quality rendition, of one of the most universally loved olfactory impressions. Cosy, comforting, yet sensual and enthralling.

Bonus suggestion:the all-rounder

So I know we’re potentially straying into signature scent territory here, but Ryan asked for a suggestion for a good all-a rounder. A Jack of all trades, never fail, Swiss Army knife of scents..and immediately what sprung to mind was Vétiver Fauve by Guerlain’

Launched in 2025. The nose behind this fragrance is Delphine Jelk. Top notes are Fig and Pineapple; middle note is Cypriol; base notes are Vetiver and Tonka Bean. It’s a fresh, and fruity, in a ripe, sun-soaked way. There’s fig, subtle and sweet, alongside a beautiful vetiver. There’s a real sense of greenery and lushness, but it eventually becomes warm and woody, but never unbalanced.

It’s this sense of balance, running throughout the composition, which in my mind, makes it worthy of consideration for an all-round fragrance.
